Entrevista a AMORPHIS! Responde su tecladista, Santeri Kallio...

Bueno, gente... Impresionante, gracias a Marcela de Prensa Icarus, pudimos darnos el gusto de hacerles una entrevista a los mismísimos finlandeses AMORPHIS, a pocas semanas de su aterrizaje en Argentina, para presentarse por primera vez en nuestro país -en El Teatro Flores-, junto a sus compatriotas Children of Bodom.

Cabe mencionar la enorme importancia de un reportaje como éste para nosotros, un medio que no tiene base en la Capital Federal, de modo que nuestra alegría es total. Encima quien les escribe es fanático de AMORPHIS, entonces... felicidad completa!!

El cuestionario fue respondido por SANTERI KALLIO, tecladista y compositor en AMORPHIS.

INTERVIEW AMORPHIS - JAVIER PARENTE - OXIDO CHIVILCOY

1- First at all, congratulations for this amazing new album, on my humble opinion it's probably the best album of this year! Please, tell us about the concept behind "Skyforger" and the meaning of the image on the cover.

Thanks a lot. Great to hear that you like the album that much! Skyforger tells a story about blacksmith Seppo Ilmarinen a character from Finnish national epic Kalevala. In Kalevala is said that Ilmarinen hammered firmament (sky), northern lights and colors of sunrise and sunset glow. The image in the cover is the tree of life which helps the firmament not to fall down. As it is said that Ilmarinen made the sky, we found a connection to use the tree of life as an album cover. The idea to use this tree in the cover came from Travis Smith the cover designer.

2- Could you mention the basic differences between this new record and "Silent Waters" and "Eclipse"?

Well the band has developed ever since Tomi Joutsen came along. Four years ago all the material for Eclipse was ready before he joined the band, so the time structure and the process was long for that album. Silent Waters is a classic follow up album and it was actually made quite in a hurry between the touring. We did not even make any demos for that album - straight to the studio! The latest album Skyforger is the result of growing together as a band with a new line-up, getting to know our new sound and strenghts and of course experiencing from playing nearly 200 gigs. Musically I would say Skyforger is little bit more experimenting with styles, having longer and little bit more complex song structures, some people might call that "progressive"? Anyways the process was really unpainful and professional. And yes we did make a decent demos this time.

3- What represents the "Kalevala" for the Finnish culture, and why do you write your songs based on that book?

It is basically everywhere in the culture. I would say it is pretty much the same as a bible to a religious man. Only difference is that nobody really reads Kalevala except the kids. But everything about a Finnish culture its roots and peoples thoughts and mental states are in that book. It is a national epic.We use Kalevala propably because it is way cooler to use timeless mythological stories instead of somebodys personal love poems made for ex-girlfriends. Oh yes, and Joutsen does not want to write lyrics. Somehow using stories also makes to music little bit more timeless I think.

4- I'm still surprised about the incredible voice of Tommi Joutsen... What can you say about the importance of his vocals in the magic of the songs?

Personally I like his voice ten times better than our former singer Pasi Koskinens voice. Sometimes Pasi sounded little like a duck. I don´t know but somehow Tomi always manages to pull out great feeling and powerful performance to the songs. Maybe it is because of he is pretty serious man.

5- The first four tracks of "Skyforger" are the most wonderful songs I could hear in many time... We read on the cd booklet that there were four band members composeing the "Skyforger" themes. Where did you find your inspiration to compose those beautiful melodies (besides the "Kalevala")? And which are your favourite songs of all Amorphis career?

Actually every one - even Jan and Niclas participated on a composing process. We just did not have enough time to finish the songs they had made. As I remember we dropped off from the album 6-7 songs in the studio. My personal inspiration is piano. I just sit on the piano every once in a while and see what kind of song comes out. If it is a good one I´ll take it to the rehersing place too see other guys faces and reaction.

6- What can you tell us about the actual situation of the Finnish Metal scene? What bands do you consider as the most important of your country?

Finnish metal scene is growing all the time. There is lots of internationally famous bands which is great. It gives the scene a possibility to grow even bigger. Most important bands could be something like HIM (ok it is not metal), Nightwish, Children of bodom, Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius, Apocalyptica, Amorphis, Impaled Nazarene, Wintersun and Lordi.

7- Personally, I think that Amorphis has been -and actually is!- the most original band of Scandinavia. What kind of bands do you listen? Does one great band like Amorphis still receive influences of those bands that you use to listen?

Of course, good bands are ALWAYS a huge source of musical inspiration. I listen sometimes 70´s and 80´s heavy rock like Led Zeppelin, AC/DC and Iron Maiden. There is also couple of interesting new bands: Riverside, Volbeat, Blackfield and Fair to midland. Some ethnic music works too like Piirpauke.

8- Next year will be the 20th anniversary of the creation of the band. What are the plans to conmemorate this? An official DVD, maybe?

We are planning to relase a DVD next year. First we just have to do it. There has been plans to record a live show in the fall. The record label has been showing green light for the DVD, which makes the releasing inevitable. Definately some kind of anniversary gig / tour would be cool too!

9- Tell us, please, your best remembrances of the early years... What do you feel today, when you listen "The Karellian Isthmus" or "The Privilege of Evil"? When I listened "Tales From the Thousand Lakes" at the first time, I couldn't believe it... What does that great work mean in the story of Amorphis?

Tales is one of our most important and liked albums. We try always add some songs from Tales to the set list and enjoy playing and headbanging these classic metal tunes.

10- This will be your first live gig here in Argentina... Did you visit other SouthAmerican countries before? Please tell us about what you hope to find here...

We have played once in Mexico, but this is our first time in the south. I´m looking for nice people, crazy shows, beautiful women and lots of lots of partying with COB and local lads!

11- Thanks a million for your genteel answers, this interview is very, very valuable for us.... Congratulations for your magnificent art!!!

1-Antes que nada, felicitaciones por este asombroso nuevo álbum, en mi humilde opinión es probablemente el mejor disco de este año! Cuéntanos acerca del concepto de "Skyforger" y el significado del arte de tapa.

S.K.: Muchas gracias. Es grandioso saber que les ha gustado mucho el álbum! "Skyforger" cuenta una historia acerca del herrero Seppo Ilmarinen, un personaje del libro épico nacional finlandés, el "Kalevala". En el "Kalevala" dice que Ilmarinen forjó el firmamento con su martillo y allí resplandecieron las luces del Norte y los colores del amanecer y de la puesta del sol. La imagen de la portada representa al Arbol de la Vida, el cual sostiene al firmamento para que no se derrumbe.

Como allí dice que Ilmarinen creó el cielo, encontramos la conexión para usar al Arbol de la Vida como arte de tapa. El que tuvo dicha idea fue Travis Smith, el diseñador.

2-Podrías señalar las diferencias básicas entre este nuevo álbum y los anteriores "Silent Waters" y "Eclipse"?

S.K.: Bueno, la banda ha evolucionado desde que Tomi Joutsen llegó. Cuatro años atrás, todo el material para "Eclipse" estaba listo al momento de unirse él a la banda. De modo que la estructura de tiempos y el proceso fueron largos en ese álbum.

"Silent Waters" es un clásico disco continuación y fue hecho a las apuradas mientras estábamos de gira. Ni siquiera grabamos demos para ese álbum, fuimos directo al estudio!

El último, "Skyforger", es el resultado de crecer juntos como banda, con una nueva formación, llegando a conocer nuestros nuevos sonidos y posibilidades; y por supuesto ganando experiencia tras haber tocado en alrededor de doscientos shows. Musicalmente podríamos decir que "Skyforger" experimenta un poco más con los estilos, teniendo canciones más largas y un poquito más complejas en sus estructuras, alguna gente podría llamarlas "progresivas"? De todas maneras, el proceso de grabación fue verdaderamente muy agradable y profesional, e hicimos demos decentes esta vez.

3-Qué representa el "Kalevala" para la cultura finlandesa, y por qué ustedes escriben sus canciones basándose en ese libro?

S.K.: Está básicamente diseminado por toda nuestra cultura. Podríamos decir que es como la Biblia para un religioso. La única diferencia es que realmente nadie lee el "Kalevala", excepto los chicos. Pero todo lo que concierne a la cultura finlandesa, sus raíces, el pensamiento de la gente y sus planteos mentales, está en ese libro. Es nuestra épica nacional.

Probablemente usamos el "Kalevala" porque es más interesante escribir sobre leyendas mitológicas atemporales antes que escribir poemas de amor personales dedicados a ex novias... Y además, a Tomi Joutsen no le gusta escribir letras. Aparte de que creo que usar estas historias transforman a la música en algo un poco más atemporal.

4-Todavía estoy sorprendido con la increíble voz de Tomi Joutsen... Qué puedes decirnos acerca de la importancia de sus vocalizaciones para alimentar la magia de las composiciones?

S.K.: Personalmente, me gusta diez veces más su voz que la de nuestro anterior cantante Pasi Koskinen. A veces Pasi sonaba casi como un pato! No sé, pero de algún modo Tomi siempre se las ingenia para extraer un gran sentimiento y lograr una poderosa performance en los temas. Probablemente es porque Tomi es un tipo bastante serio.

5-Los primeros cuatro temas de "Skyforger" están entre las canciones más maravillosas que pude escuchar en mucho tiempo... Vimos en el libro del CD que hubo cuatro miembros de la banda componiendo los temas de "Skyforger". De dónde obtienen su inspiración para la composición de esas hermosas melodías (además del "Kalevala")? Y cuáles son tus piezas favoritas de toda la carrera de AMORPHIS?

S.K.: Actualmente todos, hasta Jan y Niclas, participaron del proceso compositivo. Solo que no tuvimos tiempo suficiente para finalizar los temas que ellos crearon. Recuerdo que quitamos del álbum seis o siete canciones que grabamos en el estudio.

Mi inspiración personal es el piano. Simplemente me siento en el piano de a ratos, y veo que clase de canción me va saliendo. Si me parece buena, la llevo al lugar donde ensayamos para ver las caras y las reacciones de los demás.

6-Qué puedes contarnos acerca de la actual situación de la escena del Metal finlandés? Qué bandas consideras las más importantes de tu país?

S.K.: La escena del Metal finlandés está creciendo todo el tiempo. Hay muchas bandas famosas internacionalmente, lo cual es grandioso. Eso le brinda a la escena la posibilidad de hacerse aún más grande. Las agrupaciones más importantes podrían ser HIM (ok, no es Metal!), Nightwish, Children of Bodom, Sonata Arctica, Stratovarius, Apocalyptica, AMORPHIS, Impaled Nazarene, Wintersun y Lordi.

7-Personalmente creo que AMORPHIS ha sido -y todavía lo es!- la banda más original de Escandinavia. Qué clase de agrupaciones escuchan ustedes? Puede una banda consagrada como AMORPHIS todavía recibir influencias de aquellas bandas que ustedes acostumbran escuchar?

S.K.: Por supuesto, las buenas bandas SIEMPRE son una enorme fuente de inspiración musical. Yo a veces escucho Heavy Rock de los años 70's y 80's, como Led Zeppelin, AC/DC y Iron Maiden. También hay un par de nuevas bandas muy interesantes: Riverside, Volbeat, Blackfield y Fair To Midland. También algunos trabajos de música étnica, como Piirpauke.

8-El año próximo se cumplirá el vigésimo aniversario de la creación de la banda. Cuáles son los planes para conmemorarlo? La edición de algún DVD oficial, tal vez?

S.K.: Estamos planeando lanzar un DVD el año que viene. Primero tenemos que armarlo. Hemos hablado de grabar un show en vivo antes del cierre de este año. Nuestro sello nos ha dado luz verde para la edición de un DVD, lo cual torna inevitable dicha edición. Y definitivamente, alguna especie de gira con shows aniversarios también estarían muy buenos!

9-Cuéntanos, por favor, tus mejores recuerdos de tus primeros momentos en la banda. Qué sienten hoy cuando se retrotraen a "The Karellian Isthmus" o "The Privilege of Evil"? Cuando yo escuché "Tales From the Thousand Lakes" por primera vez, no podía creerlo... Qué representa ese gran trabajo en la historia de AMORPHIS?

S.K.: "Tales" es uno de nuestros discos más importantes, y uno de los que más le han gustado a la gente. Siempre tratamos de agregar algunas canciones de "Tales" a nuestros setlists, y disfrutamos mucho tocándolas y haciendo headbanging con esos clásicos temas metálicos.

10-Este va a ser su primer show en vivo aquí en Argentina... Han visitado algunos otros países sudamericanos antes? Cuéntanos acerca de qué esperan encontrar aquí...

S.K.: Hemos tocado una vez en México, pero ésta es nuestra primera vez en Sudamérica. Vamos en busca de gente agradable, shows descontrolados, hermosas mujeres y mucha, pero mucha joda junto a Children of Bodom y los chicos de allá!

11-Un millón de gracias por tus gentiles respuestas, esta entrevista es realmente muy valiosa para nosotros... Felicitaciones por su magnífico arte!!!

S.K.: Muchísimas gracias, nos veremos en Buenos Aires, no podemos esperar!

AMORPHIS se formó en Helsinki, Finlandia, en 1990.

Su actual formación la componen Tomi Koivusaari y Esa Holopainen en guitarras, Tomi Joutsen en las voces, Santeri Kallio en teclados, Jan Rechberger en batería y Niclas Etelavuori en bajo.

Han publicado hasta la fecha un total de nueve álbumes de estudio:

Rivadavia 7800, Capital), junto a sus compatriotas Children of Bodom; y a los créditos locales Akrida, Hate Fusión y Opression Silent. Organiza Icarus Music, otra cita imperdible con la mejor música del orbe!
